about

Eyes of Egret And Water is an album length exploration between performer and environment. Beyond this aim is the idea that performer and environment aren’t two separate things but two parts of the same source. As highlighting these two pieces is essential to this work, the “playing” part is almost entirely intuitively generated. This marks a return to more spontaneous performance works, as most of my work for around 8 years have been composition focused. Instead of recording entirely outside, portions of the album have field recordings recorded separately and instruments later added. In the performances captured environmentally, there was preference to musicality over fidelity. Don’t be surprised to hear wind, faint voices, and other non-descript audio phenomena.

Also, as I feel it’s important to note, there is no multitracking of guitar parts, delays, or looping pedals. This is how I actually play. I have noticed great confusion on this point in hearing others thoughts about my playing who do not see it live.

This album was initially finished in Fall 2018 for release on Kendra Steiner Editions, and was shelved as the label stopped releasing music. After a period of meditation I felt the album was too focused on electronic elements and lacking the rawness of the environmental recordings as a whole. Most of the original tracks were removed from the record to push the field recordings center stage. I wrote two short pieces and recorded them indoors in the same spirit of the field recordings to make the album more cohesive, personal, and less electronic.
